Writing Style: Are You a Real Writer?

Introduction

In my teaching journey and writing workshops, I often encounter excitement from participants eager to work with a "real" writer. Most people equate being a "real" writer with being published. With three novels and countless articles to my name, I certainly fit this traditional definition.

However, the more I immerse myself in professional writing and teaching, the more I question this notion. To me, being a "real" writer is about mindset, not just publications. Many published writers are indeed real writers, but not all real writers are published?"yet. I've met many talented writers who haven't been published, but I believe they will be if they persevere.

What Makes a Real Writer?

Real writers aren't born; they're made. While many have a natural drive to write, five essential tools are crucial for developing into a real writer.

1. Unique Writing Process

The cornerstone of effective writing is a tailored writing process. An ineffective process can hinder your progress, while a personalized approach, suited to your strengths and weaknesses, can significantly enhance your writing.

2. Recognizing Strengths and Weaknesses

Understanding your writing strengths and weaknesses is vital. Identify what challenges you and what comes easily. This awareness enables you to leverage your strengths and address areas that need improvement.

3. Embracing Criticism

Real writers must cultivate the ability to critique their own work and edit effectively. A support network, like a critique group or a trusted reader, is invaluable in this process.

4. Being an Avid Reader

Writers should be voracious readers, exploring diverse authors and genres to deepen their understanding of language and its nuances. Reading not only fuels inspiration but also enriches vocabulary and language appreciation.

5. Developing a Strong Work Ethic

Commitment to regular practice is key. Whether it’s a few hours or just one each day, consistency in writing is essential. A steadfast writing routine, interrupted only by significant events, helps maintain focus. Even an hour a day can lead to completing a novel if that's your goal.

Conclusion

To become a real writer, you must refine these five tools: a personal writing process, knowledge of your strengths and weaknesses, openness to criticism, a love for reading, and a robust work ethic. Master these, and you're well on your way to becoming a true writer.
