The Cover Letter Made Easy
How to Write a Winning Cover Letter
Congratulations on completing your manuscript! Now, you might be wondering how to get it in front of publishers. The answer is a well-crafted cover letter. It’s crucial in presenting your work and increasing your chances of publication. Here’s how you can easily write an effective cover letter.
What Is a Cover Letter?
A cover letter is a formal letter that accompanies your manuscript. It provides context about your work and introduces you to the editor or publisher. This letter is essential because it can persuade them to read your manuscript.
Writing a cover letter isn’t difficult, but it’s important not to leave out any crucial details. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you succeed.
Step-by-Step Guide to Writing Your Cover Letter
1. Your Contact Information:
Start by writing your name, address, and contact number/email on the right side of an A4 sheet.
2. Publisher’s Information:
Below your contact details, on the left side, write the editor’s or publisher’s name and address.
3. Date:
Include the date on the right side.
4. Greeting:
Begin with “Dear [Mr./Ms. Last Name],” if you know the recipient’s name. If not, use “Dear Sir/Madam.”
5. First Paragraph:
Introduce your work briefly. For example:
“I am enclosing the synopsis of my book, TURTLES, and I wonder if you would be interested in it.”
6. Main Body:
Give more information about your book. Describe the content in one or two lines.
Example: “TURTLES is about keeping and caring for turtle pets indoors.”
Explain why it will appeal to readers and who your target audience is.
Example: “TURTLES is a pet book that would interest children aged 8-16 and all pet lovers because it’s practical and easy to read.”
Highlight your qualifications.
Example: “This book is based on my own experience in turtle breeding.”
7. Additional Information:
Mention any enclosures like a sample chapter. For instance:
“I also enclose a list of chapters and a sample chapter for you to read.”
8. Submission Package:
Your complete proposal package usually includes the cover letter, synopsis, sample chapter, and a list of chapters. Sending everything initially can save time.
9. Self-Addressed Envelope:
Note that you have enclosed a stamped self-addressed envelope (S.A.E.) for responses. This is essential unless you’re submitting via email.
10. Closing:
Close the letter politely.
Example:
“Thank you for your time.
I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
Yours sincerely,
[Your Full Name]
[Your Email Address]”
Submitting Online
Follow the same procedure for online submissions, but omit the S.A.E. Be aware that some publishers don’t accept sample work via email, so always check their submission guidelines first.
Now you’re ready to write your own cover letter. Good luck!
