The Allure of Older Men

Exploring the Charm of Mature Men

When brainstorming for my final blog topic, my husband playfully suggested discussing the appeal of older men, whimsically naming it "Who's Your Daddy?" Though he was kidding, the idea intrigued me, and here we are.

Focusing on men over fifty, let’s acknowledge the appeal of youthful charmers?"but those sculpted physiques often aim to attract other men. While they’re easy to admire, it’s akin to window shopping at a candy store?"enjoyable, yet out of reach.

My firsthand insights into the allure of older men come from my experiences in the shipping industry, where I’ve worked alongside seasoned Merchant Mariners?"not your average sailors. These men have spent much of their lives on commercial ships, journeying across the globe. Even after settling on land, they remain deeply connected to the maritime world.

Adventures with Mariners

My job occasionally takes me to destinations like Singapore, Tokyo, Copenhagen, Barcelona, and Norway. In each port, I’ve met sailors?"listening to their tales, sharing laughs, and enjoying their company. Inspired by their stories, I’m crafting an anthology titled Hello, Sailor, set for a 2008 release, featuring three novellas drawn from these rich encounters.

These mariners are strong-willed, humorous, and undeniably charismatic. Most importantly, they genuinely cherish and respect women. Yes, they share the occasional risqué joke?"they’re sailors, after all?"but they consistently treat me with such chivalry that it feels almost gallant. I must admit, sometimes they outdo even my husband in mannerliness!

The Unpretentious Appeal

These men aren’t "pretty boys." Their rugged demeanor stems from years of independence and resilience. The sailor’s life isn’t easy; hard work and experience are etched into their faces, giving them a unique attractiveness. While they may not fit classical definitions of handsome, their maturity and individuality are captivating.

In a culture obsessed with youth, it’s refreshing to remember that sex appeal doesn’t fade with age. Both men and women remain vibrant and passionate for as long as the fire within burns. I intend to keep my flame alive for years to come, and I believe my sailor friends share that sentiment.

A New Perspective on Life

To encapsulate my feelings about life and writing, I’m reminded of Lena Horne’s 1981 Broadway show The Lady and Her Music. In it, she described herself as a late bloomer?"an idea I’m beginning to appreciate more fully.

Early in her performance, she sang "Stormy Weather," a number she revisited later with newfound depth. She announced it by stating she had grown into the song. Her reinterpretation was powerful, enveloping both her and the audience with its fervor.

Like Lena, I’m learning to approach my craft with fresh insight, discovering that reinvention can lead to unexpected fulfillment. Who knew it could be this rewarding?
