What’s Your Villain or Villainess Like?
When crafting a villain or villainess, their character can vary widely. Are they related to the protagonist, lurking and manipulating from the shadows, or have they recently emerged as a new threat? Understanding their personality is crucial. Are they charismatic and influential, or do they prefer to strike when your guard is down?
Creating a background for the villain is essential, but it shouldn't be overly detailed. Consider whether they are misguided and redeemable, or if they are destined to meet a fitting end. Each hero or heroine faces a unique antagonist, revealing the true essence of the characters as the story unfolds.
In writing fantasy, villains are inevitable, though exploring other genres might lead to stories without traditional antagonists. Life itself can present enough challenges. Besides, heroes often have their own flaws that need transformation throughout the narrative.
Do I ever want to put my villains in their place? Absolutely. After all, they wouldn't be villains if they didn’t create chaos. Often, I don’t fully understand my characters until they take shape on paper, surprising me along the way. Even a secondary character might evolve into the primary antagonist if their nature demands it.
To make villains real and believable, delve into their minds and let other characters help build their story. Doing so reveals their motivations and actions, creating a rich and engaging past.
Whether I’ve answered any questions or not, I know each writer brings a unique perspective to their villains. Ask a hundred writers, and you’ll get a hundred different takes, but one thing remains constant: aren’t villains characters too?
