Red Light Opportunity
Summary:
Wandering through the city's bustling streets, I had all the time in the world but nothing to do. I’d just enjoyed a free meal at the 11 o’clock serving and decided that today could be the day to donate plasma. This would mean an afternoon at the plasma center, followed by a restaurant meal and some leftover change for cigarettes. Sleeping at the mission would provide a comfortable night’s rest and clean clothes, a necessity given my dusty appearance from sleeping under the Fourth Street Bridge. I suddenly had a plan.
The street was crowded as usual at midday. I navigated through the sea of businesspeople, doing my best to avoid their hurried energy. By the time I reached the end of the street, the crowd had dispersed. As I paused at the crosswalk, considering whether to head east or west, I noticed the imposing gates of the capitol building across the street. I needed to head west for a few blocks before turning north to reach the plasma center.
Two sharply dressed men stood nearby, waiting for the light. I assumed they were legislators heading back to work after a lavish lunch. An idea struck me.
“Excuse me," I began. "Do you realize that more than half the people in this city work for governmental bodies? Most of these jobs don’t generate income; they just drain the taxpayers' pockets. Maybe it’s time to downsize and focus on the needs of the working class, your real constituents?”
They ignored me, as expected, but I pressed on.
"Think about saving money through operational efficiency. Addressing fraud could cut costs substantially."
I could see them growing uneasy.
"Rethink unnecessary government positions that serve no purpose. And what about those expensive gym facilities that only officials use? If only I had received your level of healthcare when I was employed. High-priced contracts, kickbacks, and prescription laws you’re about to impose?"all need rethinking if you truly care for the people you serve."
The light changed, and they hurried to the other side. I followed, my voice rising with passion.
"I used to have a job, and a third of my paycheck went to taxes! Sales tax, gas tax, property tax?"you’re taking more than half of what we make. Don’t you get it?"
They reached the capitol gates swiftly, leaving me at the entrance. I stood my ground, survival instincts preventing me from pursuing them further.
"When budget cuts happen," I yelled after them, "You start from the bottom, not the top! Ordinary folks are always left struggling."
As they disappeared from view, I noticed a golf cart speeding toward me, manned by security personnel. I turned and fled, confident they’d give up the chase once I crossed the perimeter of the capitol grounds. There was still time to get to the plasma center and make my donation.
