Seeking Feedback: Insights from an Experienced Author on Tactical Writing Issues
Overview:
In my early days as an unpublished author, I was fortunate to receive guidance from seasoned writers. This article aims to share my own experiences, especially the unexpected ones, to help others on their literary journey.
The Value of Snail Mail Queries:
Despite being more time-consuming and costly, I found that sending queries by snail mail often resulted in better responses. Physical letters seem to be taken more seriously than emails, which might just get deleted.
Charting My Own Path:
I decided to send out over 500 personalized query packages within three months. I meticulously followed each agency’s guidelines, with one exception: I didn’t adhere to exclusive reading requests. This practice, in my view, unfairly benefits publishers at the expense of writers and should be abolished. For now, writers should be transparent about making simultaneous submissions.
Why Go Big?
Time is limited, and casting a wide net increases your chances of success. My novel, Coinage of Commitment, is a unique love story that didn’t fit the mold most agencies were looking for. Many are conservative and prefer tried-and-true themes, but persistence paid off. Although landing an agent proved difficult, three publishers offered me contracts.
Discovering Small Publishers:
After exhausting traditional resources like Writer's Market and Firstwriter.com, I found success with smaller publishers listed on sites like Predators & Editors. These publishers, often using POD technology, are more open to innovative works and seem motivated by a genuine love of literature.
Looking Forward:
Future articles will delve into topics such as improving your manuscript, working with independent editors, and navigating the less savory aspects of the publishing industry.
This journey taught me that persistence, creativity, and openness to new opportunities can eventually lead to success in the literary world.
