When the verdict was announced, my client beamed, quickly turning to shake my hand energetically and pat my shoulder. His swift movements took me by surprise, and as I gazed into his eyes, I found not relief, but joy. Seeing my expression, he glanced upward as if in gratitude to the heavens, then returned his gaze to me with innocent eyes.
"Thank you so much, counselor," he said, his voice full of appreciation as he continued shaking my hand. "I knew you were good from everything I'd heard and seen. You've proven your worth and have my deepest gratitude." With a broad grin, he spun around and moved toward his wife standing just behind the rail.
Other court observers approached me, but I kept a watchful eye on my client. I noticed the subtle glances he shared with his wife, a silent communication that was hard to interpret. They embraced as I shifted my attention back to those speaking with me.
"For someone so young, you handled the case impeccably, creating reasonable doubt where there was only circumstantial evidence," complimented an older attorney, Ben. "It’s clear they didn’t like the couple’s parenting style, but that’s just bias."
"Thanks, Ben; your opinion means a lot to me," I replied, suspecting he had been observing the proceedings.
As I collected my papers, I saw that my client and his wife had already left. The prosecutor nodded at me in passing but said nothing. I noticed the detective standing by my table.
"At least we got them noticed," he remarked. "They’ll probably leave town. We’ll track them, though; people like that can’t resist repeating their actions. The boy was clearly abused, and if we find a DNA match, it might lead back to a hired drifter. Their insurance scam involved theft staged to seem random."
He continued, "Holding the kid to keep him quiet may have suffocated him. Finding him in the woods, battered, was a distraction. Didn’t you notice how they reacted to the not guilty verdict? It wasn’t relief."
"No, sir," I responded. "Just a random act in a dangerous city."
"They are," he replied, leaving the room.
As I exited, a few more people shook my hand. Outside, I sat on a bench, pondering the court officer’s avoidance of my gaze. I was young but sharp, able to dig through details to make my point. Yet, this time, my instincts stirred uneasily. I sensed something amiss in the couple’s story; everything fit too neatly.
Returning to my office, I realized this case would bring more opportunities my way. The clients had money and influence, and despite my doubts, the victory would benefit my career. In the end, the win mattered most.
