While covering for the receptionist during lunch, I penned installments of a suspense thriller set on the Oregon coast. My colleagues eagerly anticipated each new chapter. Years later, having moved to Hawaii, I began sending "Memos from Maui"?"email updates capturing the unique experiences of island life. The positive feedback I received deepened my commitment to writing.
Embracing Structure and Screenwriting
After returning to the mainland, I encountered an exciting opportunity while browsing a Learning Annex catalog?"a screenwriting class led by Lew Hunter from the UCLA Film School. I embraced Lew's structured approach, learning the art of story and character development through the framework of a three-act play. My first screenplay, Dance of the Heart, emerged from this experience, although it initially went unnoticed in competitions. Encouraged by my belief in the story, I eventually transformed it into a novel over the course of a year.
Navigating the Publishing World
With my novel complete, I explored publishing options and attended a Book Camp workshop. There, I realized that securing a traditional publishing deal was as unlikely as my screenplay becoming a film. However, the workshop introduced me to self-publishing, thanks to Penny Sansevieri, a self-published author. Representatives from companies offering self-publishing services armed me with the technical support I needed.
Becoming a Published Author
Fueled by motivation and guided by valuable resources, I achieved my dream of becoming a published author. I now eagerly share my journey with others, assuring them that their dreams are attainable. It's all about committing to your vision, believing in your work, and refusing to let doubts hold you back. I'm living proof that with determination, you can turn your writing dream into reality.
