Article

Every writer stands to gain by evaluating their individual writing process. By refining your strategy, you can increase both the quantity and quality of your work.

Recently, a writer friend expressed frustration about her declining word output. "I spend more time at the computer than ever, but my productivity has dropped," she lamented.

Drawing from my experience coaching novice writers, I asked her, "Tell me about your writing process."

"My what?" she replied, puzzled.

This highlighted a common oversight?"many experienced writers rarely discuss this crucial element. We're often too focused on deadlines and tasks to contemplate our process. Interactions with fellow writers tend to center on sharing successes, seeking feedback, or simply taking a break.

Some writers subscribe to the idea that if their process isn't broken, there's no need to fix it. But what happens when it does break down, as it did for my friend? Without an understanding of your process, you can't make necessary repairs. Like any machine, regular maintenance can prevent future breakdowns.

After analyzing her writing routine, we discovered that changes in her home life had eaten into her prewriting time. Once she adjusted her schedule, her word count improved.

So, how is your writing process?

Many writers are wary of the term because it reminds them of rigid structures imposed in school. But there's no single, universal writing process. Each writer has unique strengths, weaknesses, and personality traits, leading to a distinct approach.

While each writing process is unique, several constants exist:

- Generating ideas and choosing a focus
- Organizing those ideas
- Writing
- Revising
- Editing

The time spent on each stage varies by writer and task. For me, familiar tasks require little time to choose a focus or organize ideas, allowing me to dive into writing quickly. Conversely, I can produce several pages of fiction in an hour due to extensive prewriting preparation.

Over the years, I’ve honed my process to spend minimal time on drafting, allowing creativity to flow without worrying about grammar or structure. I focus on getting words down, then save and print my work for later review.

Revision occupies the largest portion of my time, involving multiple drafts to reshape the piece. Depending on the complexity, I may return to brainstorming, organizing, and writing to refine my work. I concentrate primarily on the larger issues of focus, development, and organization, making minor grammar and structural adjustments as needed.

Once satisfied with the content, I begin final editing, focusing on word choice and sentence structure.

If you're determined to improve your writing quality and productivity, take the time to analyze your personal process. You may be surprised by what you learn, and you'll certainly find ways to enhance your work.
