Laura Preble is a multifaceted talent?"an award-winning teacher, jazz singer and pianist, and acclaimed author of The Queen Geek Social Club and its sequel, Queen Geeks in Love, both published by Penguin Books. Interview with T.E. Pouncey

T.E. Pouncey: Your novel was delightful. Does The Queen Geek Social Club draw from your life?

Laura Preble: It’s an imaginative take on my high school self, had I possessed more confidence and better fashion sense. Many elements reflect my teaching experiences at West Hills High and Mar Vista High in San Diego. I blend various student traits to craft my characters, much like creating a Frankenstein, minus the bolts of lightning.

TEP: Do you start with a character's personality or appearance?

LP: I usually imagine a voice first. For Queen Geeks, the character Shelby emerged from a middle-of-the-night inspiration. Her personality shaped her appearance?"smart, witty, with a sharp sense of humor. She resembles me on a particularly good day, if viewed through a flattering lens!

TEP: Shelby's robot sidekick Euphoria is memorable. Which robot would you choose to hang out with, R2-D2 or C-3PO?

LP: That's a tough choice, akin to choosing which child to save! I’d pick C-3P0 because he talks. R2-D2 is intelligent but communicates in beeps, which might wear on me.

TEP: If The Queen Geek Social Club became a movie, would you want to write the screenplay?

LP: Absolutely! If you know any powerful Hollywood contacts, let me know. I adore writing dialogue and believe I’d excel at screenwriting.

TEP: Growing up in Ohio, which science fiction authors were your favorites?

LP: I worked at a library and loved sneaking away to read Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Spider Robinson, and more. I’m a big fan of sci-fi and fantasy?"Tolkien and Piers Anthony were also huge influences.

TEP: Are there plans for more sequels or new characters?

LP: Yes! Queen Geeks in Love arrives this November, continuing the adventures of the geeks exploring dating and geek culture. Future stories include Comic-Con adventures and the amusing chaos of Geek Fest.

TEP: How do your sons feel about your geeky persona?

LP: They’re budding geeks themselves! Austin joins me at Comic-Con; he even helped promote my book there. Noel, being young, is already captivated by space and magic?"a little geek in the making.

TEP: Is your first novel, Lica's Angel, still available?

LP: Yes, I self-published it before securing a publishing deal. It’s available on Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and iUniverse, often present at my book signings too.

TEP: What sparked your love for jazz?

LP: My father’s vast collection of jazz records hooked me. Meeting my husband, Chris, a jazz saxophonist, further kindled my passion. We create music together, and our album Blue Skies is still popular.

TEP: Which role is more challenging: being a teacher, writer, or musician?

LP: Balancing all three is the real challenge. I aim to excel in teaching, writing, and music, while also being a good mom and wife?"and maybe, someday, an Olympic discus thrower! (Just joking on that last one.)

TEP: What can we expect from you before the year ends?

LP: Queen Geeks in Love releases on November 6th, and I’m working on Punk Boy Mysterious, a standalone novel. I’m also completing Prom Queen Geeks, another installment in the series, due next fall. I’m writing for Writer's Digest and teaching at the Southern California Writer's Conference. I dream of a TV show, a movie, an Ellen appearance, and perhaps a Pulitzer for humorous literature featuring a robot. (Shouldn’t that be a category?)
