Thank you for joining us, Vicki. We’re eager to learn about "Europe for the Senses: A Photographic Journal." Can you tell us more about your book and what you aim to convey through its photos?
Vicki:
"Europe for the Senses" is more than just a travel and photography book. It's designed to transport readers to diverse European destinations through sensory imagery?"inviting them to experience the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches that make Europe unique. Whether you're a novice or seasoned traveler, the book aims to ignite a craving for Europe by highlighting the oft-overlooked details waiting to be discovered.
RV:
Where were you born, and where do you reside now?
Vicki:
I was born in St. Charles, Missouri, and stayed there until college. My husband and I were in Kansas City when he received military orders to move to Stuttgart, Germany. Initially, I wasn’t thrilled about the move, but after six months, I fell in love with exploring new places. We've been in Stuttgart for seven years now!
RV:
Having traveled to 45 countries since moving to Stuttgart, could you share your thoughts on travel and whether these trips were primarily for your photography?
Vicki:
The rich history of Europe amazed me. Unlike the few hundred-year-old sites in the U.S., you can explore places in Europe that are over a thousand years old. This history draws me in; photography is secondary. I always have a camera with me, but it's the destination itself that inspires me.
RV:
What inspired you to write "Europe for the Senses"?
Vicki:
The idea came from my grandparents after they received my travel emails and photos. I wanted to share the feelings and history of every place I visited. Many people, even other military families, hesitate to travel abroad, so I hoped my book would make it easier for them to take that first step.
RV:
Which countries do you spotlight in your book, and are they your favorites? Why does Europe lend itself so well to photography?
Vicki:
The book highlights 15 countries, with a focus on Germany and Italy?"popular among tourists and two of my favorites. Europe’s diverse landscapes and preserved history make it perfect for photography. You can capture snow-capped mountains, flourishing vineyards, and sites that have withstood nature and time.
RV:
Are the photos in your book of major attractions? How did you choose which to include?
Vicki:
I included both famous sites and hidden gems. While major attractions are a must-see, it's often the little-known spots that linger in memories. Choosing which photos to include was tough, but I aimed to balance well-known vacation spots with unexpected destinations.
RV:
When did you discover your talent for photography?
Vicki:
I started photography in 4-H with my dad as my instructor. I won my first contest and continued taking photos. It wasn’t until my grandparents suggested a book that I realized I had a knack for it.
RV:
Your narratives add depth to your book. Can you describe your writing style?
Vicki:
I wanted to create vivid descriptions that immerse readers in each scene. My goal was to let readers feel as though they were standing amidst the places I’ve captured, engaging all their senses?"not just their sight.
RV:
Do you have formal training in photography or creative writing?
Vicki:
My photography training was primarily through 4-H classes and my dad’s coaching. While I don’t have formal creative writing training, I’ve taken many writing classes during my Master's studies.
RV:
The theme of senses is significant in your book. How did you come to emphasize this?
Vicki:
Initially, I rushed through trips, missing the depth of each experience. When I slowed down to appreciate what I was sensing?"sun on my skin, unique aromas, breathtaking sights?"the trips became richer and more memorable.
RV:
Could you explain your vision for photography that awakens the senses?
Vicki:
I focus on lighting and symmetry, understanding how slight adjustments can transform a shot. I strive to capture the essence of a location, sometimes sprawling on the ground or taking risks to get the perfect angle.
RV:
Why do photographs have such a lasting impact?
Vicki:
Photos encapsulate the real essence of a place, evoking longing and emotion. They’re like windows to the soul, capable of leaving a lasting emotional imprint.
RV:
Which countries are still on your travel list?
Vicki:
So many! I’ve yet to visit Ireland, Spain, and Portugal, and I also have a keen interest in exploring more of Africa.
