Top 10 SEO Copywriting Tips
Enhancing SEO with Experimentation
I have always been curious about the question: "What would happen if...?" This curiosity naturally extends to my love for testing and tracking changes to see what factors can improve or hinder a situation. Recently, I conducted a small SEO copywriting experiment, and I'm excited to share my findings with you.
Understanding the Variables
Before diving into the details, it's important to note that the results of this experiment won't necessarily apply universally. The outcomes can vary greatly depending on factors like keyphrases, website differences, and especially link popularity?"a crucial factor in achieving high rankings.
The Experiment
I targeted the home page of one of my sites, which wasn't ranking in the top 50. With some strategic adjustments, I managed to propel it into the top 10.
Initial Observations
I seldom check rankings regularly, but when I noticed a high rank for a keyphrase not present in my site's text, I investigated. It turned out the keyphrase was in the ALT tags and the title tag. This led me to question whether ALT tags had regained their previous SEO importance.
The Strategic Changes
- Removal and Replacement: I removed the existing keyword from the title tag, leaving it only in the ALT tags, and inserted a more competitive keyword into the title tag. Initially, this new keyword wasn't ranked in the top 50.
- Keyword Movements: A few days later, my home page jumped to position
18 for the new keyword, although it dropped slightly for the original keyword.
- Further Adjustments: Over time, the original keyword disappeared completely, while the new keyword fluctuated but eventually stabilized in position
16. I added the new keyword to ALT tags and body copy, featuring it in a sub-headline and strategically placing it within the text, avoiding keyword stuffing.
Results
About a week later, the home page cracked the top 10 for the new keyword.
Lessons Learned
This experiment underscores that there's no singular path to improving search engine rankings. Success requires balance, testing, and continual tracking to uncover what works for specific pages. If a change results in positive movement, keep it. Negative impacts should prompt reevaluation.
Future Considerations
My experimentation hasn't ended. I plan to explore additional strategies like adding anchor text links from internal pages or crafting articles with keyword-rich links to boost rankings further. A diversified SEO copywriting approach, leveraging tags, body copy, and links, is a wise strategy for aiming at top rankings.
As the saying goes, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket." Adopting a varied strategy is key to successful SEO copywriting.
