Your Fortune Lies in the Follow-Up
Would You Spend Your Entire Marketing Budget on a Single Super Bowl Ad?
Most likely not. You understand that a single exposure isn't enough to make a lasting impact. Yet, many businesses tend to focus on one-off marketing efforts rather than consistent, repeated messaging.
Why does this happen? Often, it's simply due to a lack of awareness or perhaps the misconception that repetition is monotonous.
The reality is, consistent follow-up is where your success truly lies.
A Valuable Lesson in Repetition
Recently, I attended a conference featuring Bill Glazer, a direct marketing expert and co-leader of the Glazer-Kennedy Inner Circle with Dan Kennedy. Bill shared an enlightening story about running Baltimore's top men's clothing store, Gage Menswear, with his father.
In one of his early direct mail campaigns, Bill decided to send the same promotional offer to the same list three times. Initially, his father thought this was a waste of money, but Bill was persistent. The result? Their response rate doubled. This success turned his father into a believer in the power of follow-up.
Why Repetition Works
We encounter thousands of messages every day?"over 3,700, in fact. To cut through the noise, repetition is crucial. You need to grab attention, make your audience engage, and prompt them to take action.
Where to Enhance Your Follow-Up
Evaluate your marketing strategies and identify areas to incorporate follow-up:
- Ezines: Are you engaging your audience frequently enough? Reaching out once a month isn't sufficient. Aim for at least weekly communication. If you're struggling with content, consider systems that simplify the process.
- Teleseminars and Live Events: Announcing an event just once or twice isn’t enough. To fill a teleseminar, I typically send at least three promotional emails. For live events, marketing should start at least six months in advance with multiple reminders.
- One-on-One Marketing: When cold calling or mailing prospects, don’t hesitate to follow up multiple times. Persistence often pays off. Personally, I’ve responded positively after several follow-ups.
- Advertising: Instead of spending on a few large ads, opt for smaller, frequent ones. Many publications offer discounts for multiple ads, boosting your visibility without breaking the bank.
The Key to Success
Experts agree?"repetition is fundamental. You don’t have to reinvent your marketing strategy constantly. Sometimes, reiterating the same message is more effective than staying silent.
Successful marketing isn’t about doing something once; it’s about consistent engagement and follow-up. That's where your true fortune lies.
