Shifting Deadlines
Navigating Changing Deadlines
Summary
What do you do when a client suddenly moves up a deadline? Do you panic, or are you prepared for such surprises? Having a solid plan in place helps you manage shifting deadlines, which are all too common in this business.
Managing Client Expectations
As a writer juggling multiple projects, I always try to establish a clear deadline with my clients, even if they initially say there's no rush. "I'm in no hurry" often turns into "Are the articles done yet?" To avoid awkward situations, I ensure that I know exactly when a project is due?"especially if the client suddenly wants it sooner.
Setting Clear Timelines
Whenever I start a project, I ask for a specific timeline for its completion. If the client expects a draft by a certain date, I make sure to deliver it. Additionally, I ask them to return any feedback within a set timeframe, especially if the final deadline is approaching. This proactive approach helps avoid those uncomfortable "Where's my finished copy?!" conversations, even if the delay is on their end. Ultimately, as the writer, the responsibility for a smooth process falls on me.
Staying Prepared
Thankfully, I begin working on most assignments right after acceptance. Starting with research, I move onto outlining, drafting, and finally, writing the complete article. Sometimes, I take breaks between these steps to gather more information or simply rest my mind.
Because of this approach, if a client urgently requests a completed project, I can often provide at least some of the work almost immediately. Given the nature of client interactions, I know that even agreed-upon deadlines can shift. How I handle these changes reflects how effectively I work with my clients.
