Assume Nothing: Spell It Out
Word Count: 292
Summary:
Landing a man on the moon was a landmark achievement, yet we can’t assume everyone understands or knows about it. When writing, it's crucial to include detailed background information to ensure readers fully grasp your message.Article Body:
Thirty-seven years ago, America achieved a historic feat by landing the Apollo 11 lunar module on the moon. For those of us who witnessed it, the event is unforgettable. I vividly remember being an almost 11-year-old, pausing my summer clarinet class to watch the moon landing on a black-and-white TV.
Why bring this up? Am I commemorating the occasion? Yes and no. While the moon landing was a monumental event in human history, many people alive today don't recall it. Anyone under 42 or 43 likely has no memory of the 1969 first moon landing, possibly hearing about subsequent ones instead. Given that we haven’t returned to the moon in over 30 years, many only know these events through history books.
Though I'm no longer young, I haven't reached the Jurassic era either. Still, I've learned one important lesson when writing about past events: never assume readers know the context. Whether in articles or other writings, always clarify acronyms, expand on your ideas, and ensure your message is clear. Your readers might be younger, less informed, or simply unfamiliar with the topic. Providing background information, even when it seems obvious, is essential to effective communication.
