13 Steps to a Powerful "Slippery Slope" Online Sales Letter
Overview
Many of the solo professionals I coach are service providers like coaches, consultants, and creatives. Increasingly, they’re also beginning to sell digital products on their websites. This strategic move offers a cost-effective alternative to hiring them and generates passive income.
The Challenge
A common mistake I see is attempting to sell e-books or tutorials on regular web pages by simply listing a brief description and price, expecting a large volume of sales.
The Solution
What you really need is a dedicated sales page with a "slippery slope" sales letter. This means creating a page that captivates and compels the reader to keep reading and ultimately make a purchase. Here’s how you can craft that:
1. Limit Navigation
- Reduce distractions by eliminating unnecessary links. Keep navigation relevant to the product, such as FAQs and the order page.
2. Craft a Compelling Headline
- Your headline is crucial. Use a formula like "How to _________ So You Can ____________," ensuring the second part highlights a significant benefit, such as "double your business" or "gain peace of mind."
3. Identify the Prospect’s Problem
- Engage your audience by addressing their pain points or sharing a relatable story of your own from failure to success, highlighting how your product resolves these issues.
4. Introduce Yourself
- Explain your qualifications on the topic. Consider including a photo and audio greeting to build trust, as people buy from those they know, like, and trust.
5. Highlight Benefits with Bullets
- Describe what the customer will gain from your product. Instead of listing contents, present each item as an exciting benefit. For example, turn "5 tips on how to save money on groceries" into "Revealed: 5 ways you can save hundreds of dollars on your monthly grocery bill."
6. Incorporate Testimonials
- Show prospects that others have bought and benefited from your product. Place testimonials throughout your letter, using full names, web addresses, and if possible, photos and audio testimonials for added credibility.
7. Emphasize Value
- Compare the cost of the product to the cost of a one-on-one session with you. For instance, a manual priced at $49 is a great value if an hour of your time costs $250.
8. Offer Enticing Bonuses
- Include valuable bonuses you could sell separately, like resource lists, articles, additional tips, or a free consultation.
9. Provide an Unconditional Guarantee
- Ease the buyer’s mind with a guarantee. While a few may exploit this, the increase in sales typically outweighs any losses.
10. Create Urgency
- Encourage immediate action by offering a limited-time deal. Be genuine about deadlines to maintain trust.
11. Clarify Next Steps
- Make it unequivocally clear how to purchase. Use phrases like "Click below to order now on our secure server" and include frequent order links throughout the page.
12. Include a Final Call to Action
- In your P.S. after your signature, reiterate the urgency. For example, "Don't miss out on this great opportunity. Remember, you can buy now and change your mind at any time."
13. Provide Contact Information
- Anticipate questions by listing an email address and monitoring it regularly. A real address and phone number can also build trust.
