Third Quarter Sees Weaker Sales for Automakers
Automakers are experiencing weaker sales this September amid ongoing economic challenges. However, some companies with new models are performing better than others. General Motors (GM), Nissan, and Honda reported sales growth, while Ford, Toyota, and Chrysler faced declines. Industry sales this September reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 16.23 million units, down from 16.60 million units the previous year.
Jesse Toprak, executive director of industry analysis at Edmunds.com, commented, "This month unfolded as anticipated." Automakers with fresh models, like GM's Cadillac CTS and new crossovers, Honda's Accord, and Nissan's Altima, saw significant gains.
Surprisingly, the luxury segment performed well despite concerns over the housing market, rising gas prices, and interest rate pressures. "Those factors didn't affect luxury vehicle buyers," Toprak noted.
In September, GM, Ford, and Chrysler held a combined market share of 52.3%, a decrease from 55.1% in the same month last year, but slightly up from 52.1% in August. Market share percentages for the key players were: GM at 25.6%, Toyota at 16.3%, Ford at 14.4%, Chrysler at 12.2%, Honda at 9.2%, and Nissan at 7.2%.
To invigorate sluggish sales, GM has introduced new incentives on large pickups and SUVs for October. Following two consecutive months of sales growth, GM is offering $1,000 cash rebates on models like the 2007 and 2008 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Envoy, as reported by Bloomberg. These offers extend through October and are alongside existing incentives, although they cannot be combined with GM's zero-percent financing extended to October 31 for select SUVs and large pickups, according to spokesman John McDonald.
