My First Car: Pimping My Ride by Accident
When I say I "pimped" my first car by accident, I mean it literally. My ride was a 1971 Dodge Challenger, and the adventure began on my way home from the lake. I spun out and dented the wheel on a cement island. The car came with stock wheels and worn tires, so replacing the dented wheel seemed like the perfect opportunity to upgrade the entire set. Since the new wheels were slightly larger than the originals, new tires were in order as well. This marked the beginning of many expenses with my beloved car?"most of which, unfortunately, weren't quite as fun.
I decided on a set of five-spoke chrome wheels and some Goodrich radials. As a teenager fresh out of school, my budget was tight. I financed the upgrade with money from a lawsuit after being clipped by a truck, but that’s another story. The transformation was striking, and I loved how the new wheels looked. In contrast, the rest of the car seemed plain, so I bought some pinstriping tape and got creative. After several rolls and with fingers nearly seizing up, I finished a nice set of pinstripes. As a complete novice in automotive DIY, I was pretty proud. I hopped in my sleek, pinstriped ride and celebrated with a long, squealing burnout.
Soon, I realized the interior needed a facelift to match. Although I loved the stock three-spoke steering wheel, I opted for a polished wood one. Some great seat covers completed the transformation. Overtime at work came in handy for funding these changes. Once again, I smoked the tires, comfortably seated in my plush new interiors, with hands gripping the varnished mahogany wheel.
The car was evolving nicely until one day I pulled alongside a friend. I couldn’t hear him over the pounding bass of his stereo system. My own stock stereo suddenly seemed underwhelming. Back to work I went, requesting more overtime. Fortunately, the mill was busy. A few weeks later, I found myself tearing out the dashboard to install a new Pioneer stereo, mounting speakers in the doors and rear windowsill, and securing amps and a subwoofer in the trunk. I sat in my rejuvenated ride and, with my sound system thumping, peeled out of the driveway. My neighbors must have loved me.
Alas, my pimping adventures came to an end as the Challenger began demanding more attention?"brake jobs, blown cylinder heads, a new carburetor. Unable to keep up, I eventually sold her about a year later.
When my daughter gets her first car and considers adding a DVD player?"with my money, of course?"I’ll sit her down and share the story of how I "pimped my first car."
