Successful DVLA Auction of Personalized Number Plates
The DVLA recently held a successful auction for personalized number plates, running from Wednesday, October 24th, to Friday, October 26th, at Down Hall Hotel in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire. The event attracted enthusiastic bids from the public and dealers via in-person, online, telephone, and postal methods.
The DVLA is permitted to auction only those registration numbers that have never been assigned to a vehicle. They cannot sell numbers currently owned by the public or those linked to vehicles no longer in existence.
Highlights of the Auction
The standout sale was the number plate WE57 HAM, related to West Ham, which fetched £45,000 after a spirited bidding war among West Ham supporters. The successful bidder remained anonymous, participating online. This sale surpassed the previous record for a football-related plate, AR53 NAL, which sold for £36,000 in 2004. Additionally, a unique framed plate signed by 44 Hammers footballers, including legends like Sir Geoff Hurst MBE and Martin Peters MBE, was auctioned for £1,100, with proceeds going to the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK.
Other notable sales included the registration 1 DAM, which sold for £25,000?"considered reasonable for such a desirable combination featuring the exclusive number one. The number 78 G brought in £16,000, while registrations like 1 WEE and 1 TAA each fetched £15,000, and 1 RRJ secured £14,000.
Bargains and Surprising Outcomes
There were some remarkable bargains at the auction, such as B111 DUF, sold for £350; BER 3T for £450; LON 3R for £600; and DOU 99Y for £800. Surprisingly high bids were noted for CRA 19S and SCR 44P, each at £8,600, and ALL 3X at £9,000. On the other hand, PAM 911S, with a reserve of £500, and RUM 5S, with a reserve of only £400, went unsold.
Attractively priced novelty plates included COO 1L at £7,500, GOA 1S at £7,100, CLU 8S at £8,700, and MU55 ELS at £5,000.
Additional Costs and Total Income
All bid amounts were exclusive of additional charges, which included an auctioneer’s commission, VAT at 17.5%, and a £80 transfer fee. These added roughly 25% to the initial bid prices.
The total revenue from the auction exceeded £4 million, with VAT and transfer fees bringing in nearly £6 million for the treasury.
Upcoming Auction
The next auction is scheduled for December 4th, 5th, and 6th at Tankersley Manor, Barnsley, South Yorkshire. This is expected to be the last auction for 2007, although occasional special sales have been held around Christmas for exclusive plates likely to attract significant bids.
