VW Revives the Iconic Rabbit: A Nostalgic Return
Volkswagen enthusiasts, get ready to welcome an old favorite this summer?"the Rabbit is making a comeback to dealerships across the U.S. and Canada.
Returning to its original roots, the fifth-generation Golf will be rebranded with the nostalgic Rabbit nameplate, a nod to its storied past. The Rabbit was not only the first Volkswagen model produced in the United States but also the first foreign car built there, capturing the hearts of American drivers in the 1970s.
Originally introduced during an era of long gas station lines, the Rabbit gained popularity with its impressive fuel efficiency and attractive pricing, offering a wide range of standard features. However, in 1984, the Rabbit name was shelved in favor of the Golf.
“The Rabbit was unique to the U.S. and Canadian markets, while the rest of the world knew it as the Golf,” explained Kerri Martin, Volkswagen’s director of brand innovation. According to Martin, American drivers "seek a connection with their cars," and names like The Thing, Beetle, Fox, and Rabbit foster this bond.
The 2006 Rabbit, however, is far from just a nostalgic reissue. Built in Wolfsburg, Germany, this model starts at $14,990 for the two-door version and boasts advanced features such as an ABS braking system, traction control, active front head restraints, front side airbags, air conditioning, and a remote locking anti-theft alarm system.
New enhancements include a standard electro-mechanical steering system and an optional Electronic Stabilization Program. The Rabbit also offers improved interior space, featuring a generous rear hatch opening and increased legroom.
Every new Volkswagen comes with four years of unlimited-mileage, 24-hour roadside assistance.
Even before hitting the market, the new Rabbit has already garnered over 25 awards in 16 countries, including the prestigious Top Safety Pick Silver Award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Globally recognized as the Golf, this model has sold over 25 million units across five generations, solidifying its place as a best-seller.
Get ready to hop into history as the Rabbit returns with a blend of nostalgic charm and modern sophistication.
