Volkswagen and DaimlerChrysler are collaborating in a new venture. While they aren't merging, they are planning to develop products for each other. Curious about what's coming? Here's a closer look.
Official Announcement: Volkswagen has opted not to bring its microbus minivan to the U.S. market. Due to conversion costs and exchange rate issues, VW will instead introduce a version of Chrysler's popular minivans in the U.S. market. Based on the Chrysler Voyager, this yet-to-be-named VW minivan will essentially be a rebadged Voyager. This move fills a significant gap in VW's lineup, preventing current customers from looking elsewhere for larger vehicles.
For DaimlerChrysler, the partnership will allow them to maximize minivan production. They are also considering importing rebadged versions of VW's compact Polo to address a notable gap in their lineup. Expected to be sold under the Dodge brand, the Polo will serve as an entry-level vehicle beneath the soon-to-launch Caliber, replacing the Neon. Although specifics are still emerging, the Polo could debut as a 2007 model.
While VW and DCX aren't merging, their collaboration positions both companies to benefit significantly. Now, the big question is?"how will consumers respond to these rebadged models?
