Mechanics Oppose Extending Oil Change Intervals
The nation’s leading mechanics are pushing back against a growing trend in the automotive industry that suggests cars can travel over 5,000 miles before needing an oil change.
Certified Master Automobile Technicians, recognized by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), shared their insights in a Valvoline survey. This survey explored the contentious topic of extending oil change intervals and the impact of delayed maintenance on vehicle owners.
"Certified Master Automobile Technicians are the best of the best," said ASE President Ron Weiner. "They are at the forefront of vehicle care, and they have strong opinions on how drivers can ensure their cars and trucks operate optimally and last longer."
Oil Change Frequency
Mechanics emphasize that oil is crucial for engine health, with 84% highlighting that neglecting regular oil changes can lead to significant vehicle issues. Sixty percent uphold the traditional standard of changing oil every 3,000 miles.
The survey also revealed that Valvoline is the preferred motor oil among ASE-certified technicians for both their own vehicles and their recommendations to others.
"Using quality motor oil, like Valvoline, and changing it regularly is key to avoiding engine damage and saving money," explained Valvoline Marketing Director Bryan Emrich. He noted that regular oil changes protect against sludge build-up, enhancing engine performance and preventing costly repairs.
Delayed Car Maintenance
Although most car owners understand the importance of regular maintenance for safety and performance, many are ignoring this advice. An overwhelming 87% of mechanics believe that American car owners are deferring routine maintenance, mainly due to cost concerns. Ironically, 97% say that postponing maintenance ends up being more expensive, as unattended issues can escalate and cause additional problems.
