Inspections Reveal Most Vehicles Need Better Maintenance

Overview

Are you diligent about changing your vehicle's oil every 3,000 miles? Do you routinely check tire pressure or adhere to a maintenance schedule for tire rotation? How regularly are your vehicle's fluids inspected?

A Widespread Issue

If your answer is "no" to any of these, you're not alone. The Car Care Council found that during National Car Care Month, 87% of vehicles inspected had deficiencies.

"While this is an improvement from last year's 90% failure rate, 87% is still too high," said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. "People are starting to understand the importance of vehicle maintenance, but there's more work to be done."

Essential Maintenance Tips

Even if you’re not mechanically inclined, there are simple steps you can take to keep your car operating safely.

Fluid Checks: Ensure your car's fluids are topped up to keep it running smoothly. Low levels can affect performance and cause internal damage. For instance, 23% of vehicles had low or dirty power steering fluid, and 26% were low on brake fluid.

Tire Care: Checking tire pressure and tread is crucial. During the inspections, 25% of vehicles had improperly inflated tires, while 10% needed new tread. Regularly under-inflated tires reduce gas mileage and wear out faster, while worn treads increase the risk of skidding on wet roads. Check tire pressure when you refuel.

Belts and Hoses: Many breakdowns can be prevented by periodically inspecting and replacing worn belts and hoses. Inspections showed 25% of vehicles had at least one belt needing attention, and 12% required new hoses.

Battery and Lights: Keep an eye on your vehicle’s battery health, air filters, and lighting, including brake, tail, and headlights, and turn signals.

By staying proactive, you’ll not only extend your vehicle's life but also ensure safer travels.
