In-Car Entertainment: A Soothing Solution for Passengers
Summary
Transforming the classic "Are we there yet?" into "We're there already?" is becoming a reality for many families. By equipping their vehicles with rear-seat entertainment systems and other conveniences, they’re enhancing road trips just in time for the summer vacation season.
Article Body
Despite rising fuel costs, Americans are expected to embark on road trips in record numbers this summer, a tradition that has continued since the late 1950s. By 2004, annual miles driven by consumers reached 1.7 billion, nearly triple those logged in the 1960s. Yet, even with the appeal of distant theme parks, beaches, and interactive museums, the challenge remains: how to keep kids entertained during the journey.
"A bored child can make any drive seem longer," said Mark Boyle, director of marketing for Visteon Corporation, a leading manufacturer of mobile electronics for vehicles. "Enhancing the driving experience is crucial for automakers, dealerships, and consumer product makers. We’re seeing truly innovative entertainment technologies emerge."
One such innovation is Visteon's Dockable Entertainment system featuring Game Boy Advance, which combines in-car movies with over 750 game titles available for Nintendo’s popular platform. This system seamlessly integrates into the car's interior but can be removed quickly for use in another vehicle or setting. It includes wireless game controllers and headphones.
Industry studies reveal that video games rank among the most popular in-car entertainment options, alongside movies and music. By combining these in a single platform (the Visteon system also plays MP3 files), manufacturers are meeting consumer demand for more enjoyable road trips.
