Hot Weather Impacts the London Tube
Summary: The intense summer heat on the London Tube has posed challenges for years.
The rising temperatures on the London Tube during the summer have long been a concern. In response, a London Underground team is testing an innovative groundwater cooling system. This summer, the trial will take place at Victoria Station, which is located so deep that it’s effectively underwater, requiring the pumping of 35 liters (eight gallons) per second to prevent flooding. The new system aims to channel this water through pipes to heat exchange units on platforms, which will cool the air by drawing in warm air and releasing cooler air. The excess heat could potentially be used to power nearby homes and offices, helping to reduce platform temperatures.
This trial, however, is still in its early stages, alongside plans for new trains equipped with air-cooling systems for the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan lines.
Currently, temperatures in the deepest tunnels can soar to 30°C (86°F) during summer. These changes might significantly impact the London Tube. Although some lines may face closures on particularly hot days, London Underground has assured that no closures are planned for now. However, future conditions could make the underground unbearable ?" a concern highlighted by Mr. Livingstone from LU.
Recently, about 1,000 passengers were trapped for nearly two hours when three trains were halted in a tunnel due to signal failures on the Central Line between Marble Arch and Lancaster Gate. The evacuated trains resulted in three people being treated for heat-related effects.
