Get away from it all

Escape to Serenity
Have you ever felt the urge to escape from it all? In March/April 1978, Mother Earth News published a remarkable story about a couple who did just that. They bought McLeod's Island, a 90-acre paradise off the coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Living almost self-sufficiently, they relied on the island’s resources, keeping a few animals and spending minimally on groceries. However, island life wasn't without its challenges:
"The sea isn't called 'restless' for nothing. We've often witnessed a glass-smooth bay churn into a windswept chaos in seconds. Our bay can thaw and refreeze in mere hours on a December day. Winters here are unpredictable. In 1976, continuous thaws turned the bay into slushy ice?"too thick for boats yet too dangerous to walk on. We were stranded for three months. Though last winter's cold snap turned the bay into a solid path we could trek across anytime to fetch mail and supplies."
In today’s world, the internet offers the freedom to work and live from almost anywhere. But this couple didn’t have such luxuries. Sadly, current information about them is scarce. Perhaps they were swept away by life's tides.
Life involves sacrifices, and some are greater than others. As for me, buying an island isn't likely to be part of my future.
