Building a 16 ft. Grand Banks Dory
Introduction
From my childhood, I've been fascinated with boat building, initially crafting scale models that couldn’t sail. Now, I've decided to take on the challenge of building a real 16 ft. Grand Banks dory.
A Nostalgic Beginning
As a child, I often built boats, including a 10 ft. makeshift raft. With a few friends, I set sail on our local river, despite its questionable seaworthiness. One fateful day, while I was rowing, our little vessel began taking on water faster than we could bail it out. In a race against time, I resumed rowing, hoping to reach the shore before we sank.
Miraculously, we made it just in time, jumping to safety as our beloved raft went under. However, we found ourselves on the wrong side of the river, facing either a lengthy 20-kilometer walk or a swim back. Choosing to swim, we held our clothes above water, laughing off the embarrassment when we encountered classmates on the opposite shore.
Rekindling the Dream
Years later, the idea of building another boat never left me. Although tempted by larger vessels between 30 and 40 feet, the enormity of such a project was daunting. That's how I settled on starting smaller with a Grand Banks dory, which I plan to fit with a small outboard engine.
The Present Project
Equipped with boat building plans and a suitable workspace, I'm eager to bring my dory to life. By the time you read this, I may already be finished. This venture represents not only a personal achievement but also a step toward potentially building something larger in the future.
A Vision for the Future
Who knows? I might eventually construct a 40 ft. cabin cruiser, towing my Grand Banks dory behind me. And if that cruiser ever encounters trouble, I'll have my reliable dory to row to safety?"dry and fully clothed.
