Why Rent an RV?
Exploring New Vacation Options
This year, we decided to shake things up for our vacation. Typically, our travel agent secures a stay at a plush resort where we unwind with luxurious amenities and explore nearby attractions. We usually fly to our destination, though we occasionally drive if it’s close by. This time, however, we wanted to try something different?"experiencing the great outdoors in an RV. Never having "roughed it" before, we thought it might be an exciting adventure.
The Appeal of RV Adventures
Friends have often regaled us with tales of relaxing around a campfire, surrounded by stunning views of mountains, oceans, or deserts. Since we don’t own an RV, renting one seemed like the perfect solution. Not being fans of lengthy drives, we planned to fly to our destination, pick up an RV, and enjoy a week or so on the road.
Searching for the Perfect RV Rental
Our online search for RV rentals revealed plenty of options. From “RV rental North Carolina” to “RV rental Phoenix,” we discovered numerous dealers offering nightly, weekly, or long-term rentals. Phoenix, in particular, caught our interest as a popular destination we’ve always wanted to explore. We also considered Texas, Montana, Orlando, and North Dakota.
Weighing the Costs
Small RV units start around $125 per day and can rise to $300, depending on the size. While weekly or long-term rentals offered slight discounts, there were additional costs for insurance and taxes. After calculating the costs of the rental, fuel, and campground fees (ranging from $40 to $60 per day), the expenses added up quickly.
A Costly Experience
Roughing it, we realized, came with a high price tag. For the same cost, we could luxuriate in a hotel or condo, dine at exquisite restaurants, and relax by a pool or spa, rather than cooking on a campfire and dealing with bugs in a camper.
Making the Choice
Ultimately, the decision wasn’t difficult. If you love the outdoors, cooking your own meals, and camping in the wild, then renting an RV might be perfect for you. As for us, we decided it wasn’t something we could justify financially.
