A Memorable Visit to Prince Michel Vineyard and Winery
In April 2007, we attended a barrel tasting at Prince Michel Vineyard and Winery in Leon, Virginia. Winemaker Brad Hansen guided us, a group of 40, from a spacious tasting room to a grand, rectangle-shaped barrel aging room adorned with murals of old-world wine country scenes.
At the center of the room, a long wooden table was beautifully set with wine glasses, cheeses, olives, crackers, and water. Brad warmly welcomed us, expressing gratitude to the wine club members. He showcased four wines to illustrate their production process.
Brad started by sharing the history of Prince Michel vineyards and the challenges faced, such as losing 60% of their Chardonnay crop due to unexpected mid-April freezes. This area, known for cold air rolling down the mountains, poses a threat to vineyards. Fortunately, Prince Michel sources Chardonnay from vineyards on Virginia's Eastern Shore, benefiting from the warmer influence of the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay.
Tasting the Future
The first wine Brad introduced was Petit Manseng, a grape new to Prince Michel. Pleased with its first release, Brad described its dry French style, although the Petit Manseng grape can produce very sweet wines. We found this wine delightfully balanced with a sweet aura, offering a harmonious blend of citrus fruit flavors, acid, and alcohol.
Next, we sampled a barrel-selected 2006 Chardonnay, still 18 months away from release. Currently, it carried an overpowering oak flavor. Brad explained that as it ages, yeast cells will enhance the wine's flavors, and the fruit notes will intensify and achieve balance.
Following the Chardonnay, we tasted a French-style barrel-aged Syrah. Light in body, Brad considered blending it with Merlot. It still had several months in the barrel before its fall release. Lastly, we sampled a Cabernet Sauvignon set for a summer release, intended for inclusion in Prince Michel’s Symbius, a Bordeaux-style blend.
Insights and Future Explorations
As we tasted, some people enjoyed the wine, while others used the provided dump buckets. Between servings, guests explored the table for cheese, olives, crackers, and water. Brad invited questions after the final tasting. Attendees inquired about the best grape-growing areas in Virginia and blending criteria for Symbius. Brad explained that Virginia is still discovering optimal varietal climates while successfully growing grapes like Viognier and exploring Petit Manseng.
Each winery in the state aims to produce unique wines, despite offering similar styles. Brad highlighted that they blind taste different wines to craft the perfect blend for Prince Michel’s Symbius.
