The San Diego Wild Animal Park Experience

Exploring the Best of Southern California Wildlife

When it comes to tourist attractions in Southern California, the San Diego Zoo is often at the top of the list. However, just a short drive away in northern San Diego County lies an equally captivating destination that many are unaware of: the San Diego Wild Animal Park. This park, like the Zoo, is run by the Zoological Society of San Diego, a non-profit organization focused on conserving endangered species and educating the public.

Having grown up in Southern California, I visited the Park numerous times, but my most recent trip was special?"it was my first visit with my five-year-old daughter. Together, we created unforgettable memories and took incredible photos that we’ll treasure forever.

A Unique Approach to Wildlife Exploration

Opened in 1972, the San Diego Wild Animal Park stands apart from traditional zoos. Its vast, open spaces allow animals to roam in environments that mimic their natural habitats, fostering interactions among different species and showcasing their authentic behaviors. This immersive experience offers visitors a deeper insight into the lives of these majestic creatures.

One of the Park’s highlights is the Wgasa Bush Line Railway. This 40-minute tram ride covers three miles through the main sections of the Park and ventures into the San Pasqual Valley. As you travel through regions like North Africa, South Africa, the Asian Plains, and the Mongolian Steppe, a live narration from the tram driver enriches your knowledge about the wildlife. Who knew that a group of rhinos is called a crash? While this ride is perfect for older kids and adults, younger children might find the duration a bit long. Excitingly, a new transportation system is set to replace the railway in the spring of 2007.

A Feast for the Senses

The Park’s charm is enhanced by over 3,500 plant species and its Nairobi Village theme. Our visit coincided with a misty day, creating an enchanting rainforest-like atmosphere with babbling brooks and misty walkways. My daughter’s favorite spot was Lorikeet Landing, where, for just two dollars, you can purchase nectar to feed the vibrant lorikeets that will land on you in the atrium.

We then explored Lion Camp, another of my daughter's favorites. This new exhibit offers multiple perspectives of the lions, including a thrilling close-up view through a glass barrier. As a fan of carousels, I was particularly impressed by the Conservation Carousel, which features replicas of endangered animals from the Park instead of traditional horses.

Our adventure concluded with an Animal Encounter, where we got an up-close experience with a Caracal Cat and its trainer.

Membership Benefits and Supporting a Worthy Cause

For slightly more than a regular one-day ticket, you can purchase a membership to the Zoological Society of San Diego. Membership perks include unlimited visits to both the San Diego Zoo and the Wild Animal Park for a year, a subscription to ZOONOOZ magazine, a membership card, and monthly specials with discounts on food and merchandise. Since the Park operates as a non-profit organization, purchases from the gift store not only provide you with unique memorabilia but also contribute to a noble cause.

This visit was just the beginning of many more adventures my daughter and I plan to have at the Park over the next year. If you're traveling through Southern California, take the opportunity to explore the San Diego Wild Animal Park?"it's an experience you won’t want to miss.
