The Hill Club: A Timeless Retreat in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka
Discover The Hill Club in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka
If you're planning a vacation in Sri Lanka, make sure to visit Nuwara Eliya. Once the summer refuge for the British, this charming town offers a cool escape from the tropical heat. A stay at The Hill Club promises an experience you won't find anywhere else.
Step Back in Time at 5,000 Feet
Perched over 5,000 feet above sea level, Nuwara Eliya feels like a journey into the past. The adventure begins with the thrilling drive itself. We rented a vehicle, complete with a driver from our beachfront hotel, and planned stops in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, revisiting the places my uncle frequented as a tea planter in the days of Ceylon.
A Night in Kandy
Our first stop in Kandy was the Queen's Hotel, a place that exudes English charm. With wood-paneled halls and an old-fashioned lift, the hotel seemed straight out of Edwardian England. Our room, while distinctly old-fashioned, was clean and cozy, albeit with a ceiling fan that added its own soundtrack.
The hotel's garden and pool were buzzing with young travelers enjoying affordable meals and showers. Dinner was a delightful affair, with a black-tie waiter serving my curry for just over a pound sterling. The entire bill for two rooms, meals, and drinks totaled a mere £75.
The Road to Nuwara Eliya
Though the distance to Nuwara Eliya isn’t far, the steep and narrow roads make it a journey of hours. The views of tea plantations and rolling hills are spectacular, and a tour of a tea factory is highly recommended. Along the way, roadside stalls offer vegetables like leeks and carrots, reminiscent of a time when English residents filled the town.
The Hill Club Experience
Our primary reason for visiting Nuwara Eliya was to stay at The Hill Club, a place that remains part private club, part hotel. Membership, albeit temporary, is required to enjoy its amenities. The club resembles a 1930s Lake District hotel, and inside, the atmosphere confirms it.
Dining here is a formal affair, with jackets and ties required (and available if forgotten). The classic English menu, served by white-gloved waiters, includes a traditional fish course. Our room was charmingly old-fashioned, complete with hot water bottles for extra warmth.
A Slice of England in Sri Lanka
The town of Nuwara Eliya, with its gardens and bandstands, looks almost English. It’s intriguing, though, to notice the absence of English names on the golf club’s honors board post-1973?"a telling sign of the end of an era. Nonetheless, I found familiar names, including my uncle’s and a university friend’s, lovingly preserved on the board.
