10,001 Reasons We Live in Mexico

Introduction

When my wife and I decided to move to Guanajuato, Mexico as American expats in our forties, we had plenty of reasons. Since our move, that list has only grown. I’d like to share a humorous incident that added one more reason, bringing the list to 10,001.

Our Anniversary Adventure

For our 24th wedding anniversary, we took a short trip to Querétaro, a city in Central Mexico just two and a half hours away by bus. Fun fact: traveling by bus in Mexico is akin to flying ?" you even get snacks and drinks, minus the airport hassle.

Querétaro’s rich history dates back to 1531 when Spanish conquistadors, led by Hernán Pérez Bocanegra y Córdoba, took the city with ease. In 1656, it was dubbed "The Noble and Loyal City of Santiago of Querétaro." Quite a mouthful for a mailing address!

A Mix of Charm and Chaos

This colonial town has seen immense growth over the past two decades. While staying in the Historic District, it’s easy to forget that a bustling metro area exists just beyond its quaint streets. Remarkably, the Historic District feels like a small, charming Mexican town.

Yet, outside, nearly a million people contribute to the smog, and factories on the outskirts don't help. The city's air pollution rivals that of Mexico City.

Our budget hotel provided a compact bathroom experience ?" the toilet was a mere 5.5 inches from the wall! I even fell asleep on the toilet one night, resting my head against the wall.

A Memorable Encounter

Our reason count increased while wandering the pedestrian-friendly Historic District. Unlike Guanajuato, where pedestrians are often pushed into traffic, Querétaro offers vast, bus-free walkways.

As we explored, a man approached us, insisting we looked like siblings. Despite feeling uneasy, we assured him we were happily married and continued our sightseeing.

Later, inside a historic building that once housed prisoners in cramped cells, the same man admitted he’d been following us, convinced we were too affectionate to be anything but siblings. His confession left us bewildered.

Unforgettable Moments

This quirky encounter reminded us of a similar experience in Guanajuato's El Jardín. An American man claiming to be a world-renowned pediatrician approached us, boasting he could cure diseases online. We’ve only seen him once, thankfully.

Conclusion

Living in Mexico continually surprises us. From its unique characters to its rich history, there are now 10,001 reasons we’ve made it our home. Every new experience reinforces our decision to embrace life here.
