Overview
Traveling to Ras Kutani from the UK is quite a journey. You can take a 10-hour flight, or longer if you fly with Emirates, to Dar es Salaam, followed by over two hours on rough roads, including a fascinating river crossing. There’s also an option for a short flight, which we decided against on the way there but opted for on our return!
The Perfect Setting
Ras Kutani is beautifully situated around a freshwater lagoon on the Indian Ocean. Our accommodation?"whether you call it a hut, cabana, or cottage?"was designed to invite the ocean breezes. It featured a spacious, comfortable bed with a large mosquito net, which was very necessary. Although I was concerned about malaria and insects, the use of DEET and effective mosquito nets kept us worry-free, despite the absence of air conditioning and glass windows.
Relaxation and Comfort
Outside, a large verandah equipped with hammocks and cushions was the perfect place to relax in the evenings, well-protected by anti-bug spray, as we enjoyed stunning sunsets. The room also offered ensuite facilities with a shower, elegantly crafted by local artisans.
Dining and Hospitality
The food was exceptional, predominantly seafood, freshly prepared by our ever-smiling chefs. The staff were always courteous and cheerful, adding to the hospitality. A unique touch was the beach flag system to order drinks?"quite a luxury in such a remote setting.
Activities and Leisure
While there aren’t a plethora of activities, the sea offers plenty of enjoyment. Whether you’re into sailing, snorkeling, or boogie boarding, you'll find paradise here, especially with a good book in hand. Just be mindful of the waves!
