Not the Whitsundays, Australia: Part 1

Introduction

When you think of the Whitsundays, images of stunning Australian tropical islands with white sandy beaches and vibrant coral reefs likely come to mind. Maybe you’ve relaxed at a resort or embarked on a cruise from Shute Harbour. Visitors from around the world, including all corners of Australia, flock here year-round to relish the beaches, reefs, fishing, and much more. Whether you crave a peaceful day on the sand or the thrill of skydiving, the Whitsundays offer it all.

Exploring Alternatives

But what if you love the picturesque blue-green waters and idyllic islands but hesitate to board boats, planes, or helicopters? The Great Barrier Reef feels just too far away. Or perhaps you’ve already experienced the popular cruises and your budget is stretching thin. What else can you do?

Sometimes, all you want is to sunbathe on a warm beach, savor a relaxing meal at a local hotel, or explore quaint shops and various beaches.

A Different Experience

This was precisely our situation when we arrived at Airlie Beach with our fifth-wheel trailer for a couple of weeks in a tourist park. The area offers a variety of caravan parks with varying amenities. While free stays are scarce, major associations are well-represented. Traveling with our Westie, Snowy, we needed a pet-friendly spot and found just the place. We’re not fond of leaving Snowy behind, which made visiting the islands less appealing this time. Surprisingly, we discovered everything we wanted, though not quite as expected!

Our camping spot was adjacent to the small Whitsunday airport, with planes and helicopters buzzing to and from the islands and skydiving excursions from dawn till dusk?"thankfully, not at night! Having spent three years in the RAF during National Service, the noise was familiar and didn’t bother us, nor did we hear complaints from other visitors.

Discovering the Town of Whitsunday

The Town of Whitsunday, encompassing Airlie Beach, Shute Harbour, and a few other spots, is conveniently located for island cruises and reef excursions. The area is lush with palm trees and vibrant tropical flora, including the striking flame trees in Flametree.
