Setting Off
It’s 1998, and I’m headed to the pristine islands of the Andaman Sea, nestled in Koh Tarutao National Park. Famed for its mix of pirates and honeymooners, this remote paradise in Southern Thailand offers a unique escape. As the taxi fills up with a German couple in love and a Thai family with a lively five-year-old, our long journey begins.

As we reach Satun, anticipation builds. This quaint fishing village, barely two blocks long, leads directly to the ocean. The rustic charm of fishing boats and makeshift tourist offices beckons us to choose our island destination.
Each office displays enticing images of islands, offering boat rides for a fee. Savvy travelers wait to secure accommodations upon arrival to secure the best deals. Amid promises of beauty and affordability, I carefully select Langkawi, just 5 kilometers from the southern tip of Tarutao Island.

Purchasing my round-trip boat ticket for a mere $7, I board a small craft. Despite its rickety appearance, it promises a journey of three hours through the thrilling seas to Langkawi.
