Discover Middleton Place
Nestled just 10 miles west of downtown Charleston in West Ashley, Middleton Place Plantation is the crown jewel of the area. Accessible via Ashley River Road, this iconic site is one of America’s oldest homesteads. Originally deeded to Jacob Wayte over a century before the American Revolution, it later became the property of the influential Middleton family.
Historical Significance
The Middletons played pivotal roles in American history. Henry Middleton presided over the First Continental Congress, Arthur Middleton signed the Declaration of Independence, and Henry Middleton Jr. served as Governor of South Carolina and Ambassador to Russia. Williams Middleton signed the Ordinance of Secession, igniting the Civil War.
Constructed in 1755, the plantation house was partially destroyed by Sherman’s Army in 1865. The surviving southern wing was restored in 1870. However, the great Charleston earthquake of 1886 caused further damage, laying waste to the elaborate garden terraces.
Restoration and Legacy
In 1916, J.J. Pringle Smith inherited the estate and initiated a large-scale restoration of the gardens. Film enthusiasts may recognize the property from the Mel Gibson movie, The Patriot. In 1991, the International Committee on Monuments and Sites recognized Middleton Place as one of only six internationally significant U.S. gardens.
In 1974, Smith's descendants established the Middleton Place Foundation, safeguarding this National Historic Landmark.
