Some of our American expat friends are finally starting to see what I've been talking about when it comes to living in Guanajuato. If you've followed my columns, you know I occasionally lose my composure and go on spirited rants about life in this city.
I'm not referring to typical Mexican quirks, such as shops not opening on time or the laid-back approach to punctuality. I'm talking about moments that stand out, like being unexpectedly nudged off the sidewalk into the path of a speeding bus or waiting endlessly for a water delivery that only arrives after you've metaphorically dried up.
One amusing incident involved a friend of mine who visited the Mega Superstore in Guanajuato, a sign of modern changes in this traditional city. Waiting in line with seven others, she encountered a Mexican woman without any groceries. When it was her turn, this woman called her entire extended family from the coffee shop to cut in with overflowing carts. In a swift move, my friend executed her version of the "Guanajuato Shove," politely maneuvering in front while saying, "Con Permiso."
Generally, Mexicans are polite and formal when interacting with North Americans, but this should not be mistaken for mere friendliness. As Ken Luboff wisely noted, it’s often a careful mask concealing true feelings.
