Learning Spanish Part Sixteen: Do It Right This Time!
Summary
I've been reflecting on a woman from San Miguel de Allende. While we've never met in person, we've corresponded. She shared her struggles with learning Spanish, despite spending money on classes that didn't improve her spoken fluency. Unfortunately, her struggle is common. Many people move to Mexico, hoping to pick up the language, only to be met with frustration and disappointment.
From my research on American expats, whether in the Foreign Service or retirees, a frequent issue is their inability to engage with locals due to language barriers. Some Americans simply avoid learning the language, sticking to English-speaking groups. Historically, in the 1950s, such groups in Asia were referred to as “The Social Incest Club” because of their insular nature.
What saddens me is seeing those who genuinely want to learn the language fail despite their efforts. These individuals hope to broaden their social circles but end up isolated or confined to similar English-speaking groups. They need to know a crucial secret.
The commonly used "Translation Method" in language instruction often fails to teach spoken fluency effectively.
What language instruction methods have emerged over the last century? And which, if any, truly succeed?
