The main objective was to encourage thinking directly in the second language, moving away from the restrictive grammar-first approach.
The Direct Method introduced a transformative philosophy in language teaching. It emphasized conducting all instruction in the target language without translating into the learner’s native tongue. The focus was on connecting meaning directly with the second language. Charles Berlitz, a notable advocate of this method, established schools worldwide that continue to use it today.
The central idea was to encourage learners to internalize the language naturally, without relying on their native language. By using pictures and pantomime, teachers conveyed meaning directly. For example, instead of translating the English word "cat" to the Spanish "gato," a picture of a cat would be shown to convey meaning through context.
