Hello From Vancouver ?" Part 1: Arrival

I set off early yesterday from the picturesque city of Victoria, boarding the Pacific Coachlines bus at 8 am to make my way back to the mainland. The journey across the water was nothing short of stunning. I spent the entire ferry ride on the top deck, basking in the beautiful scenery and warm sunshine.

Upon arrival at 11:30 am, I got off at Broadway and Cambie, as the driver recommended, and caught the 99B bus to the University of British Columbia (UBC). About half an hour later, I reached my destination. My first stop was the student union building to grab a bus map and campus guide. After some directions, I checked into my cozy and affordable student room, part of a six-unit apartment, priced at just C$38.00 per night.

With a few hours before the Servas conference check-in, I decided to explore by renting a bike from the local university co-op. Opting for a mountain bike, I pedaled west along North West Marine Drive. Although the dense forest hid the ocean view, trails led down to Spanish Bay.

Cycling eastward, I discovered a stunning spot offering views of the Burrard Inlet's mouth and North Vancouver's majestic mountains. This portion of the university campus boasts mansions and vibrant flowers, making it exceptionally scenic. Continuing down NW Marine Drive, I cycled past Spanish Banks, Locarno Beach, and Jericho Beach?"a true recreational haven. Although the tide was low, beachgoers were still out enjoying the sun. A well-deserved ice cream break gave me time to relax and watch the lively beach scene.

The ride back up to campus wasn't as daunting as I had anticipated. UBC’s campus is vast and beautiful, featuring a blend of modern buildings and lush green spaces. Home to about 45,000 students, it is the third-largest university in Canada. The campus hosts the world-renowned Museum of Anthropology, the Nitobe Memorial Gardens, the Botanical Garden, and the Rose Garden & Chan Centre. The First Nations Longhouse, with its sculpted log poles and Indigenous art, serves as a cultural hub. UBC also boasts Canada's largest university bookstore and an Astronomical Observatory next to the Geophysical Observatory, which tracks earthquake activity.

My initial bike outing provided an excellent overview and a captivating first glimpse of Vancouver’s skyline?"arguably one of the most beautiful cityscapes I've ever encountered. This exploration set the stage before returning to my residence to prepare for the Servas Conference.
