Hello From Toronto - Part 5: A Journey of Novice Golf, Scenic Drives, Off-Road Adventures, and Fond Farewells

It’s truly astonishing how quickly nine days can pass. Today marks the departure of my brother, sister-in-law, and our two Austrian friends, who are heading back to Graz, Austria, via Vienna. As their departure looms, a sentimental feeling fills the air, knowing that this wonderful time is ending all too soon.

Despite the limited time, we managed to fit in an impressive array of activities. My goal was to give them a taste of everything that makes Toronto and Canada special. Although we occasionally rushed through events, our European guests fell in love with Toronto, much like I did years ago.

On Saturday, the six of us ventured to a par-3 golf course in the east end of the city. For my Austrian friends, it was their first golfing experience. We started with a few buckets of balls at the driving range and practiced putting indoors. The attempts at the driving range were a bit wild, but on Saturday, under a gorgeous sky, they performed admirably, losing only two balls to the water hazard. They enjoyed this new experience, discovering that golf isn’t just for the old, but a fun challenge for everyone.

Sunday brought our second major excursion: a driving tour through the scenic Kawartha Lakes. We planned two main driving tours: a wine-tasting trip through the Niagara Peninsula and this journey through the Kawarthas. As we drove east on the expansive 401 highway and into the rolling farmlands towards Peterborough, my European visitors were impressed by the landscape. Peterborough, a quaint university town, was our gateway into the beautiful lake region set amidst the rugged Canadian Shield.

Our adventure began in Buckhorn, where we marveled at the Trent-Severn Canal lift locks. A Parks Canada lock supervisor explained the mechanics, and in just 10 minutes, boats smoothly transitioned to the lower river level. We then traveled through the picturesque countryside to Bobcaygeon, where we enjoyed a delicious waterfront lunch while watching boats in the marina. Our Austrian friends, Luis and Isabella, found inspiration for future boating vacations in Canada.

Having strolled around Bobcaygeon’s charming town and waterfront parks, we continued to Fenelon Falls. Named after the waterfall that powers local electricity, the town offered yet another chance to witness the impressive canal locks while enjoying Kawartha Dairy ice cream by the scenic gorge.

As our day in the Kawarthas concluded, time seemed to fly. By mid-afternoon, we started our return to Toronto, taking the serene back roads dotted with golf courses, which my brother tried to count. The landscape’s beauty left a lasting impression on our Austrian guests, who are now eager to explore more of Canada’s lake regions on their next visit.

Monday, their last full day in Toronto, was spent biking along the Eastern Beaches. We indulged in the relaxed waterfront vibe, observing a lawn bowling game, where friendly participants explained the rules to us. Our guests frequently remarked on the friendliness of Torontonians, a quality often associated with other regions.

We appreciated the inukshuks by the beach, intricate stone sculptures made by passers-by, and watched tense points at the Kew Gardens Tennis Club. From there, we ventured west, soaking in the tranquil views of Toronto’s skyline from a little peninsula at Ashbridges Bay. What amazed our European visitors was the accessibility of the waterfront land, with secluded spots making it easy to forget the proximity of a bustling city.

The Glen Stewart Ravine provided our path back, a densely forested area that felt worlds away from urban life. Once home, we prepared for a farewell barbecue, inviting friends to join us in bidding goodbye to our Austrian visitors. As we savored excellent food accompanied by Canadian wines and beers, memories of delicious home-cooked meals by my talented brother lingered.

In the evening, we made one last car tour, starting with a nighttime visit to the Distillery District. Though the Mill Street Brewery was closed, the quiet charm of the district was enjoyable. We cruised through downtown, up Yonge Street, and crossed the Bloor Street Viaduct, arriving in Toronto’s lively Greektown. There, we relaxed over Greek snacks, reflecting on how swiftly nine days had passed.

Today, we’re returning the rented bikes and heading to the airport by mid-afternoon. These nine days felt like an extended, cherished sleepover, a time we won’t soon forget. We hope for another reunion, whether in Austria or back in Canada, to strengthen our wonderful bond.
