Discover the Canadian Rockies: Our First Adventure to Calgary, Banff, and Lake Louise
My husband and I are dedicated skiers, aiming for a week on the slopes each year. We've explored about 15 ski resorts across the East Coast, from Ontario to Quebec, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. However, we'd never ventured to the Rockies until now.
We finally planned a trip to the Canadian Rockies to experience this magnificent mountain range for the first time. Upon landing on March 4, 2006, we embarked on an exciting four-hour tour of Calgary, known as Canada's Heart of the New West. Our knowledgeable guide showed us the Calgary Tower, Fort Calgary, the Stampede Grounds, the Saddledome, and the Canada Olympic Park.
That evening, we savored a delicious Italian meal at Il Giardino on 4th Street, where we met one of Calgary's successful entrepreneurs. We stayed at the historic Twin Gables Bed & Breakfast, hosted by the hospitable Deirdre and Henry Brost. Breakfast turned into a delightful surprise as we dined with two celebrities (you'll have to read the article to find out who!).
After breakfast, we strolled from Twin Gables to downtown, and I took the C-Train to Kensington, a vibrant area known for its dining and shopping. I enjoyed a brief lunch at Indochine Bistro, learning that the young owner had come to Canada as a Vietnamese refugee?"a remarkable success story.
Our journey continued west on the Trans-Canada Highway to Banff, a charming town nestled inside Banff National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We explored three major ski resorts: Norquay, Sunshine Village on the Continental Divide, and the expansive Lake Louise. West Coast skiing truly impressed us!
The renowned Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel and Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise were highlights, both rich with history. These castle-like railway hotels, tied to the Canadian Pacific Railroad, played a significant role in Canada's development of the West Coast.
An unforgettable adventure awaited me last Friday: dogsledding with Snowy Owl Adventures in the mountains above Canmore on a crisp winter day.
Our trip was nearing its end, but I squeezed in one more exploration: a gondola ride up Sulphur Mountain, offering a breathtaking 360-degree view of Banff and the surrounding ranges. I visited the Cosmic Ray Station and walked through the Banff Springs Hotel grounds to the Banff Park Museum, one of Canada’s oldest natural history museums.
Before heading to the airport, we took a final walk through Calgary, discovering the +15 walkway system that shields visitors from the chilly winter air and exploring the lush Devonian Gardens.
Throughout our adventure, we experienced incredible skiing, stunning mountain vistas, historic sites, the thrill of dog-sledding, and the warm hospitality of Alberta. We'll definitely be back!
