Farewell to Sicily: My Final Day in Catania
Summary
After a memorable three-week adventure in Sicily, my language journey was drawing to a close. My time exploring Milazzo had ended, and with a bittersweet feeling, I began packing and preparing for my last day on this enchanting island. Around 10 a.m., I made my way to Laboratorio Linguistico, the school where I spent ten enriching days, including a breathtaking sailing trip around the Aeolian Islands. I bid a heartfelt farewell to Francesca, Sonia, and Franco, whose warmth made my stay special.A Journey to Catania
Running a bit late for my bus to Messina, I managed to enjoy one last glimpse of Sicily’s verdant north coast. Messina, a city with a rich history, is the island's third-largest urban area and a major port. I decided to take the train to Catania instead of a bus, relishing the comfort and scenery of the journey. As the train rolled past familiar sites like Mazzaro, Taormina, and Mount Etna, I felt a sense of nostalgia. Arriving in Catania by mid-afternoon, I headed to Holland International, a budget hotel conveniently located just 10 minutes from the train station.
Exploring Catania
Catania, with its baroque architecture and a history marked by layers of ancient cities buried beneath, awaited my exploration. I started with a stroll to Teatro Massimo Bellini, named after the acclaimed composer Vincenzo Bellini, born here.In search of respite from the heat, I discovered Giardino Bellini, the city’s largest park. Its lovely terraces provided panoramic views and a tranquil spot to relax.
Continuing my journey along Via Etnea, Catania’s bustling shopping street, I indulged in some people-watching before hopping onto a local bus. Public transport is one of my favorite ways to absorb the local culture, and this ride took me through both downtown and the more spacious and green residential areas near Mount Etna.
Reflection and Departure
After a full day, I settled at a café opposite Teatro Bellini for a light snack. Exhausted yet fulfilled, I headed back to my hotel to organize for my early departure the next morning.Reviewing the photos from my trip, I realized that Sicily is a treasure trove for the senses. From my initial days in stunning Taormina, excursions to Siracusa, and adventures around Mount Etna, to sailing the Aeolian Islands and exploring hidden gems like Cefalu, every moment of this language study journey was unforgettable.
Sicily's charm and diversity have captivated me, and I'm certain this won't be my last visit. Until next time, arrivederci!
