Greetings from Ottawa: Discovering the Historic Auberge McGee Inn (Part I)

Exploring a Unique Stay in Ottawa

As I cover Ottawa's Tulip Festival, I’m staying at one of my favorite types of accommodations: a bed and breakfast. Each B&B has its own charm and every owner's story adds a special touch. The historic McGee's Inn is perfectly situated near the Rideau Canal, ByWard Market, the Congress Centre, University of Ottawa, and Parliament Hill, making it easy for me to explore Ottawa's top attractions.

A Glimpse into History

Built in 1886 for politician John McGee, the mansion boasts a Victorian style with intricate wood carvings. Artisans from Toronto contributed to its detailed architecture. After the McGee family left just before World War I, the mansion became a boarding house until it was renovated into a B&B in the early 1980s.

Enter the Armstrong Family

The Armstrongs?"Ken, Judy, their son Jason, and daughter-in-law Sarah?"entered the B&B business together after Jason was laid off from Nortel. Ken retired from Bell Canada and pursued real estate, while Judy worked with the United Church of Canada. Sarah brought her graphics expertise from the ByTown Group. They explored several hospitality business ideas before deciding on a bed and breakfast.

When the McGee Inn became available in 2003, its size and potential revenue convinced them it was the right choice. Despite facing financing challenges due to the post-SARS tourism downturn, the Caisse Populaire supported their venture, with a local manager personally visiting the property.

A Rapid Transformation

After closing the deal, the Armstrongs had just three days to refurbish the inn. They quickly discarded old furnishings, redecorated each room, and upgraded essential systems like fire detection and wireless Internet. The local university students and homeless shelters even benefited from the old furniture they gave away.

Embracing a New Lifestyle

Now, Ken and Judy are renovating the basement to move in, while Jason and Sarah live off-site with their children. Though the hospitality business is demanding, the Armstrongs find it immensely rewarding. They cherish the flexibility and family time this venture offers, overcoming challenges with teamwork and enthusiasm.

Stay tuned for more about the charming experiences and unique character of the McGee Inn, as this journey into Ottawa's historical gem continues.
