Hello From Ottawa: My Packed Itinerary for a 2-Day Getaway to Canada's Capital
For a while, my friend Theresa and I had been eager to revisit Ottawa for "Winterlude," the city’s renowned winter festival. Our previous attempt three years ago was thwarted by rain, melting the ice sculptures and closing the Rideau Canal for skating.
Undeterred, we set off last Friday, enjoying a pleasant 4.5-hour drive before arriving in Ottawa. We checked into the historic Lord Elgin Hotel, a landmark right in the heart of the city.
Day 1: Friday Evening
We spent Friday evening exploring the vibrant ByWard Market. Dinner at Fat Tuesdays was a highlight, featuring live music and exquisite Cajun cuisine.
Day 2: Saturday Adventures
Saturday morning started with an early exploration around Parliament Hill, capturing the beauty of the area through my camera lens. Then, we headed to one of Ottawa’s winter highlights: the Rideau Canal Skateway, the world’s longest natural ice skating surface. The perfect weather made our glide down the ice delightful.
Our next stop was the 26th Annual Bedzz Races on Dow’s Lake, a lively charity event bringing joy to participants and spectators alike. Afterward, I hurried off to Confederation Park to soak in more Winterlude festivities.
The day concluded at Darcy McGee’s, a historic pub on Sparks Street, Ottawa’s pedestrian mall. Here, I witnessed the art of pouring the perfect Guinness, complete with a foam shamrock.
Day 3: Sunday Exploration
Sunday morning was reserved for the Canadian War Museum, a captivating multi-media museum by the Ottawa River. I explored an engaging exhibit, "Weapons of Mass Dissemination ?" the Propaganda of War," wishing I had more time.
My final Ottawa stop was the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, intriguingly located in a former railroad tunnel. I focused on an exhibition by Sunil Gupta, an artist exploring personal, sexual, and cultural identity. His poignant images left a lasting impression.
Looking Forward
Although I missed other major attractions like the National Gallery or the Canadian Museum of Civilization, I’m planning a return visit. Perhaps this May, I’ll catch the famous Tulip Festival in Ottawa.
This whirlwind trip left me with unforgettable memories and a desire to experience even more of what Canada’s capital has to offer.
