Hello From Ottawa ?" Winterlude at Confederation Park
Discover the Magic of Winterlude
We were lucky enough to stay at the Lord Elgin Hotel, right across the street from Confederation Park, one of the main hubs of Ottawa’s Winterlude Festival. Just a short walk put us at the heart of the festivities, surrounded by the vibrant energy of Winterlude.
What is Winterlude?
Organized by the National Capital Commission, Winterlude is Ottawa’s signature winter festival, attracting families from all over with its free activities and events. Last year, it drew in around 650,000 visitors, highlighting its popularity.
A City That Knows How to Celebrate
Contrary to any preconceived notions of Ottawa as a city of bureaucrats, the locals truly know how to have a good time. Winterlude provides a perfect excuse for everyone to embrace the winter spirit.
Main Winterlude Locations
Confederation Park hosts the Casino du Lac-Leamy Crystal Garden, featuring the Crystal Lounge, diverse food vendors, and breathtaking ice sculptures. On Saturday morning, we caught the thrilling ice carving competition. Watching skilled carvers transform blocks of ice into teddy bears, trains, and cartoon characters was mesmerizing.
Fire and Ice Culinary Demonstrations also take place here, where top chefs compete for the Winterlude Ice Chef titles.
Just a short walk away, the American Express Snowbowl offers live performances. We enjoyed an evening concert against the backdrop of the beautifully illuminated National Conference Centre.
Rideau Canal Skateway
The Rideau Canal is another iconic Winterlude spot. Gliding across its 7.8 km stretch, the world’s largest natural ice skating surface, was exhilarating. Along the canal, visitors can explore Aboriginal culture at Pig Island, test hockey skills at the Canadian Tire JumpStart Activity Centre, and immerse themselves in the 1920s atmosphere at Union Station.
The 26th Annual Bed Race at Dow’s Lake showcased a mix of athleticism and creativity, all while raising funds for charity.
Upcoming Events
On February 19, Canadian Tire invites everyone to the Great Skate on the Rideau Canal Skateway. Proceeds support JumpStart, a program helping kids in financial need access sports and recreation.
Across the River: Snowflake Kingdom
In Hull, Quebec, Jacques-Cartier Park becomes the Snowflake Kingdom, offering exciting adventures like the Ice Hogs Winter Sports Adventure and Experience Maneige for young skiers. The Ice Hog Amphitheatre features the lovable Winterlude mascots, ensuring fun for the whole family.
Taste of Winterlude
Before Winterlude officially kicks off, the Taste of Winterlude restaurant festival offers delicious prix-fixe menus at popular local eateries. Although we missed it, dining at Fat Tuesdays and Darcy McGee’s gave us a taste of Ottawa’s culinary delights.
Looking Forward
Winterlude offers a multitude of activities, and our brief stay allowed us to enjoy a few of them. We’re already planning our return, perhaps for the Tulip Festival in May. Winterlude in Ottawa is truly an experience not to be missed!
