Welcome to Orlando: Timacuan Golf and Country Club
Overview
On our final full day in Florida, we had the pleasure of playing at the beautiful Timacuan Golf and Country Club, located just 30 minutes north of Orlando in Lake Mary. Originally designed by Ron Garl in 1987, the course was revamped by architect Bobby Weed in 1996. Now, it stands among the top 14 courses in Florida, with accolades including recognition as one of the most female-friendly courses by Golf for Women Magazine.
Course Highlights
Bobby Weed’s redesign has enhanced the course, ensuring an enjoyable experience for all golfers. Timacuan boasts a spacious driving range and putting green, with a par of 71 stretching nearly 7,000 yards from the back tees. The front nine offers a links-style design, while the back nine feels distinctly Carolinian, adorned with pines and lakes.
Facilities and Instruction
The club features a lighted practice facility and hosts the renowned Mike Bender Golf Academy. Mike Bender, a two-time North Florida PGA Teacher of the Year, is recognized by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest as one of America’s top instructors. During our visit, we observed a young golfer receiving a well-crafted, video-taped lesson, impressing us with her elegant drives.
Clubhouse and Amenities
Approaching through a scenic residential area, we arrived at Timacuan’s impressive two-story clubhouse. Kim Shield, who oversees marketing, shared insights about the amenities. The clubhouse includes a full-service grill room and an upstairs dining room with expansive windows, ideal for events hosting up to 250 people. It’s a popular choice for corporate gatherings, offering Sunday brunches and Wednesday night buffets.
Local Attractions
Located in Seminole County, north of Orlando, Timacuan primarily caters to local residents. The surrounding area is vibrant, featuring waterfront restaurants, the Sanford Zoo, the Sanford Historical Museum, and Colonial Town Park, a charming area with dining, theaters, and shopping.
Our Experience
Despite the grey, drizzly weather, we enjoyed our round on Timacuan's scenic layout. The course's welcoming ambiance, friendly staff, and fellow golfers enhanced our experience. Learning we were from Canada, a generous local member shared his practice ball chip, setting a positive tone for our day.
Hole 2 posed a significant challenge, and I ended up contributing two balls to the pond. The front nine is nestled within an attractive residential area, with unique drive-through bunkers. The Carolina-style back nine presents its own challenges, with water coming into play on seven holes.
Rates
Timacuan offers competitive rates. From June to October 2005, rates ranged from $55 to $65. From November 1 to January 11, 2006, they varied from $69 to $79. During the high season, January 12 to April 23, 2006, rates were between $85 and $95.
Getting There
Lake Mary is conveniently located about 10 miles northeast of Orlando, easily accessible via the interstate. Take I-4 to exit 101a onto Rhinehart Rd, turn right, then left at the first light onto Timacuan Blvd. Follow the road for a mile to the entrance and proceed to the clubhouse.
