Hello From Orlando: Part 20 - The Walking Hall Of Fame at the PGA Father-Son Challenge at ChampionsGate
Introduction
After an exciting round at Mystic Dunes, we found ourselves with a beautiful mid-afternoon and clear blue skies. It was the perfect opportunity to take a short 10-minute drive to the Father-Son Challenge at ChampionsGate, a golf course nestled in the southern part of Orlando. Easily accessible from exit 58 on the I-4, ChampionsGate greets visitors with its impressive entrance gates.
A Celebration of Golf and Family
The Father-Son Challenge is a living testament to the sport of golf and the strong bonds of family. This unique event brings together famed professional golfers, both past and present, with their talented sons and daughters, all united by a passion for the game.
This year's impressive roster featured pairs like Jack and Jackie Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer with his grandson Sam Saunders, Vijay Singh and his 15-year-old son Qass, Mark and Shaun O'Meara, Craig and Chris Stadler, Bob and David Charles, and Raymond and Robert Floyd. Notably, Raymond Floyd has triumphed at the Father-Son Challenge five times since 1994 alongside his sons Robert and Raymond Jr. Other duos included Hale and Steve Irwin, Tom and David Kite, Bernard and 15-year-old Stefan Langer, Davis Love III with his 12-year-old son Dru, Johnny Miller and Johnny Miller II, Larry and Josh Nelson, Curtis and Tom Strange, Lee and Daniel Trevino, and Fuzzy Zoeller with his daughter Gretchen.
Up Close with Legends
As we parked and headed towards the clubhouse, we were just in time to see Davis Love III finishing his round. It's a surreal experience to be in such close proximity to these legendary figures, who appear relaxed and at ease in this tournament's unique format.
The tournament uses a "Scramble Format," where each player drives on each hole, and the best drive is chosen. Subsequently, every player plays from that point, continuing this process until the hole is completed.
Witnessing History
While we were there, we watched golf greats like Vijay Singh, Mark O'Meara, and Lee Trevino wrap up their rounds. Seeing Vijay unwind with a coffee after his final putt, watching his son finish the last hole, was a reminder of the human side of these professional players. According to Allan Findley, General Manager of ChampionsGate, the event is cherished by many of these players as it allows them to enjoy the sport as a family, away from the pressures of the PGA Tour.
A Memorable Experience
The atmosphere at the Father-Son Challenge was truly enjoyable. It was a regret not to see legends like Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer in action, but our packed schedule didn't allow for a return visit. Nonetheless, witnessing this "Walking Hall of Fame" was an unforgettable experience.
