Hello From New York City - Part 4: Staten Island and an Unexpected Encounter

Summary:
The Staten Island Ferry is a remarkable feature of New York City. Departing from a sleek, glass-enclosed terminal, this massive ferry accommodates thousands and whisks you to Staten Island in about 20 minutes. The best part? It's free! We have been thoroughly impressed with NYC's public transportation, finding it efficient, clean, and mostly safe with our week-long pass to hop on and off subways at our convenience.

Exploring Staten Island:

The Staten Island Ferry offers a great opportunity to glimpse the Statue of Liberty, passing by Ellis Island. While my simple digital camera couldn’t capture perfect pictures, I tried my best. Upon arriving at Staten Island, I spontaneously decided to board a waiting bus to explore the area, despite having no map or guide. So, we hopped on the

46 bus, headed into the unknown.

Staten Island surprised us with its diverse neighborhoods. We expected more upscale areas, yet discovered vibrant communities mainly composed of Black and Latino residents. After riding until the bus's end, we found ourselves at a nondescript shopping mall called "West Shore Plaza." There, we grabbed a sandwich and browsed a sports store with impressively low prices. Eventually, we caught another bus to continue our journey.

A Random Act of Violence:

The bus ride was uneventful until two young Black teenagers boarded without paying. Suddenly, chaos erupted as they attacked a young Latino teenager, causing shock among passengers. The attackers fled as the bus stopped, leaving the victim shaken but not seriously injured. He later recounted that a group had tried to extort money from him at the bus stop, and two followed him onto the bus.

This incident was unsettling, clashing with our positive impressions of a safer, cleaner New York. We had noted the city's cleanliness, lack of graffiti, and feeling of safety on public transit, thanks to efforts by former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Nonetheless, some violence persists.

Reflecting on a Day Well-Spent:

Returning to Manhattan, we traveled up to 103rd Street and wandered through Central Park, marveling at its beauty and recreational facilities. We strolled down 5th Avenue and into the Broadway area near Times Square, enjoying quick Italian fare at Ray’s Pizza. Despite the chilly 12°C evening, we headed home late on the Q train, reflecting on the day's memories and observing fellow passengers.
