Hello From New York City - Part 2: Exploring Midtown Manhattan

Exploring Midtown Manhattan

After our early morning arrival, we had nearly a full day to explore. The weather started out sunny, though it turned a bit cloudy and cool, staying around 15°C.

Around noon, we hopped on the Q subway line, conveniently just five minutes from our bed and breakfast, heading into Manhattan. As the subway crossed the Manhattan Bridge, we enjoyed stunning views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the southeastern tip of Manhattan.

Our adventure began in Times Square?"a perfect starting point to experience NYC. The vibrant neon signs and bustling crowds create an incredible atmosphere. Promoters filled the sidewalks, handing out flyers for Broadway shows, comedy events, and more. The sheer amount of advertising, with lights flashing everywhere, almost blends together in a sensory overload.

After taking in the sights, we headed to Rockefeller Center, though we didn’t explore the entire complex. Next on our list was Grand Central Terminal, a magnificent historic train station that opened in 1913. Its majestic central concourse connects over 100 commuter train platforms.

From Grand Central, we admired the Chrysler Building's Art Deco splendor. Though tourists can only access the lobby, its ceiling mural and intricate wood marquetry elevators alone make it a worthwhile stop.

We continued our journey north toward Central Park, strolling along Lexington and Fifth Avenues. We passed the renowned (and recently closed) Plaza Hotel and entered the southern end of Central Park. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, this 850-acre masterpiece offers much-needed green space. We explored features like the Dairy and Sheep Meadow before heading out to Central Park West, home to stately apartment buildings including the Dakota Building, where John Lennon was tragically shot in 1980. The peaceful Strawberry Fields garden is dedicated to his memory.

Spring was in full bloom, and the city was weeks ahead of Toronto's horticultural cycle. Allergies got the better of us, and by day's end, we both needed medication for hay fever.

A short subway ride brought us to Greenwich Village, with its charming brownstone townhouses. We soaked in the neighborhood's ambiance and dined at Pennyfeathers on 7th Avenue, enjoying a lovely meal on an enclosed porch with a perfect view of the street life.

Exhausted from our adventure, a couple of subway trips later we returned to our Brooklyn base, eager to rest and recharge for the next day's exploration.
